About Bill Russell
Bill Russell's 1975 Topps #23 catches him three years into an 18-year run as the Los Angeles Dodgers' everyday shortstop, all of it with the only organization he ever played for. A ninth-round pick out of Pittsburg (Kansas) High School in the 1966 draft, Russell debuted in 1969 as an outfielder, bounced between second base and the outfield in his first few seasons, and finally settled in at short in 1972. From 1973 through 1981 he anchored the Dodgers' famed infield alongside Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, and Ron Cey - the same foursome held its positions for eight and a half years, a major league record. A three-time All-Star (1973, 1976, 1980), Russell helped Los Angeles to four National League pennants and the 1981 World Series title, hitting .423 in the 1978 Fall Classic. He retired in 1986 with 2,181 games played, a .263 average, and 1,926 hits, then managed the Dodgers from 1996 to 1998.
