About Al Fitzmorris
Alan James Fitzmorris was born March 21, 1946, in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in San Diego, where he signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1966 as an infielder before a light bat pushed him to the mound. Kansas City selected him with the 40th pick of the 1968 expansion draft, and Fitzmorris debuted for the Royals on September 8, 1969, throwing three scoreless relief innings for the win. A 1973 demotion to Omaha remade him into a sinkerballing starter, and he broke through in 1974 (13-6, 2.79 ERA) before peaking in 1975, the year this card was issued, with a career-high 16-12 record, a 3.57 ERA, and 11 complete games in 35 starts. In 1976 he threw 118 consecutive innings without allowing a home run, a Royals record that stood until 1989, while helping Kansas City to its first AL West title. Selected by Toronto in the 1976 expansion draft, he was traded to Cleveland for catcher Alan Ashby the same day, then closed his career with the Angels in 1978, finishing 77-59 with a 3.65 ERA over ten seasons.
