About Steve Busby
Steve Busby, a right-hander out of USC, was drafted by Kansas City in the second round in 1971 and reached the majors the following September on a call-up from Triple-A Omaha. In 1973, his first full season, he no-hit the Detroit Tigers on April 27 for the first no-hitter in Royals history and was named American League Rookie Pitcher of the Year. On June 19, 1974, he no-hit the Milwaukee Brewers, becoming the first pitcher in major-league history to throw no-hitters in each of his first two full seasons; both gems were caught by Fran Healy, the same Fran Healy whose photo — not Busby's — mistakenly appears on Busby's own 1975 Topps card #120, one of the set's two famous photo mix-ups. Busby went 22-14 in 1974 to earn Royals Pitcher of the Year honors and made his second All-Star team in 1975, but a torn rotator cuff, repaired in pioneering surgery, sapped his effectiveness and ended his career after 1980. He finished 70-54 with 659 strikeouts, ranks ninth on the Royals' career wins list, and in 1986 became one of the first two players inducted into the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame, alongside Amos Otis.
