About Hal McRae
Hal McRae broke into pro ball as a sixth-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds in 1965 out of Florida A&M University, debuting in 1968 as a center fielder with plus speed. A badly broken leg suffered sliding in Puerto Rican winter ball slowed him afoot, and after the 1972 season the Reds traded him to Kansas City for Roger Nelson and Richie Scheinblum. The deal remade his career: over 14 seasons as the Royals' primary designated hitter, McRae made three All-Star teams, the first coming in 1975, the same year pictured on his Topps card. He nearly won the 1976 AL batting title, losing to teammate George Brett on the season's final day, and in 1982 led the league with 133 RBIs and 46 doubles en route to a Silver Slugger. His bruising, headfirst slides into second base were so disruptive that baseball's rule requiring a direct slide is still called the Hal McRae Rule. McRae helped Kansas City to the 1980 pennant and the 1985 World Series title, finishing with 2,091 hits, 191 home runs and a .290 average, then managed the Royals (1991-94) and Tampa Bay (2001-02) as Kansas City's first Black manager.
