About Kansas City Royals

Card #72 catches the Kansas City Royals in a season that set a franchise wins record but began with turmoil in the dugout. Jack McKeon, pictured in the manager's inset, was fired on July 24 with the club at 50-46; general manager Joe Burke turned to Whitey Herzog, who went 41-25 (.621) the rest of the way. Kansas City finished 91-71, the franchise's best mark to date, but still landed seven games behind the powerhouse Oakland Athletics in the AL West. First baseman John Mayberry carried the offense, becoming the first Royals player to reach 30 home runs (34) while driving in a franchise-record 106 runs. Third baseman George Brett broke out in his second season, batting .308 with 195 hits, and right-hander Steve Busby led the rotation at 18-12. Harmon Killebrew, signed as a free agent that January, closed out his Hall of Fame career as Kansas City's designated hitter.
