1975 Topps #295 Vada Pinson

About Vada Pinson
Vada Edward Pinson Jr. signed with Cincinnati for a $4,000 bonus in 1956 out of Oakland's McClymonds High School, the same program that produced future Reds teammate Frank Robinson and star center fielder Curt Flood. Two brisk minor-league seasons carried him to the majors by age 19, and in his first full year, 1959, he authored a monster season - .316, 205 hits, and NL-leading totals in runs (131) and doubles (47) - the first of what became four All-Star nods across 1959 and 1960. In 1961 he hit a career-high .343, finishing runner-up to Roberto Clemente for the batting title by eight points, won his only Gold Glove, and helped Cincinnati to its first pennant since 1940, though the Reds fell to the Yankees in the World Series. Pinson patrolled center field for the Reds through 1968 before finishing his 18-year career with the Cardinals, Indians, Angels, and Royals. He retired with 2,757 hits, 256 home runs, and a .286 average, and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1977. This 1975 Topps card, issued during his final big-league season in Kansas City, closes out one of the era's most complete all-around outfielders.
