About Doug Bird
James Douglas Bird broke into pro ball in 1969 with the Winnipeg Goldeyes after Kansas City drafted him in the third round out of Mount San Antonio College, reaching the majors on April 29, 1973, and becoming the Royals' top reliever, finishing fourth in the AL with 20 saves as a rookie. Card #364 catches him mid-career with Kansas City, where over six seasons (1973-78) he shuttled between bullpen and rotation, highlighted by a 12-10, 197 2/3-inning 1976 that led the AL in fewest walks per nine innings. Bird appeared in three ALCS against the Yankees from 1976-78, posting a 2.35 ERA in 7.2 innings, but is remembered in Kansas City for surrendering Thurman Munson's decisive homer in Game Three of the 1978 ALCS -- the last pitch he threw as a Royal. Traded to Philadelphia in 1979, he revived his career with the 1980-81 Yankees before closing out with the Cubs and Red Sox, retiring in 1983 with a 73-60 record, 680 strikeouts and 60 saves over 11 seasons.
