About Paul Splittorff
Paul William Splittorff Jr. was born October 8, 1946, in Evansville, Indiana, and grew up in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Kansas City drafted him in the 25th round in 1968 out of Morningside College; that year he threw the first pitch in Royals organization history for the Corning Royals. The left-hander debuted in the majors on September 23, 1970, and spent all 15 of his big-league seasons with Kansas City. By the time this 1975 Topps card was issued, he was fresh off his only 20-win season, 1973, when he also started and won the Royals' first game at brand-new Royals Stadium. Never an All-Star, the finesse lefty became the franchise's all-time leader in wins, finishing 166-143 with a 3.81 ERA across 15 seasons of taking the mound every fifth day. He anchored the rotation through Kansas City's 1976-1980 AL West title run, earning a reputation as a "Yankee killer" for going 2-0 in six ALCS appearances against New York, and started Game Six of the 1980 World Series. Splittorff later spent 24 years as the Royals' television color commentator and was inducted into the club's Hall of Fame in 1987.
