About Cookie Rojas
Octavio Víctor Rojas Rivas was born March 6, 1939, in Havana, Cuba, and got his nickname as a boy — his mother's Spanish pet name "Cuqui" was Anglicized to "Cookie" once he entered pro ball. Signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 1956, he broke into the majors in 1962 and blossomed after a 1963 trade to the Philadelphia Phillies, making his first All-Star team in 1965 and forming a slick double-play combo with shortstop Bobby Wine that fans nicknamed "The Plays of Wine and Rojas." Rojas landed in Kansas City in June 1970 and became the sure-handed veteran the young Royals needed, pairing with shortstop Freddie Patek and making four straight AL All-Star teams from 1971-74. His pinch-hit home run in the 1972 All-Star Game was the first ever hit by a non-American-born player representing the American League in the Midsummer Classic. By his 1975 Topps card, #169, the 36-year-old was in his sixth season anchoring Kansas City's infield — a versatile fielder who, across a 16-year career, played every position on the diamond, including one scoreless inning on the mound.
