About Bert Campaneris
Dagoberto "Bert" Campaneris was born March 9, 1942, in Pueblo Nuevo, Cuba, and signed with the Kansas City Athletics for a $1,000 bonus in 1961, one of the last Cuban players able to leave the island before Castro-era restrictions closed the door on emigration. He debuted July 23, 1964, homering twice — including on the first pitch he saw from Jim Kaat — one of only a handful of players in major-league history to open a career with a two-homer game. A wiry, quick shortstop, Campaneris anchored Kansas City and Oakland from 1964 to 1976, leading the American League in stolen bases six times and setting a record by stealing a base in twelve straight games in June 1969; he retired with 649 career steals. He started at shortstop for Oakland's three straight World Series champions (1972-1974), homering off Jon Matlack in the deciding Game Seven of the 1973 Series and catching the final out. This card's printed flag marks his 1974 All-Star selection, one of six in a nineteen-year career that also included stops in Texas, California, and a final season with the Yankees. The Athletics inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 2019.
