About Oakland Athletics
The 1975 Topps team card catches the Oakland Athletics chasing a fourth straight championship under manager Alvin Dark, back in Oakland's dugout for a second stint after piloting the 1974 World Series champions. The A's went 98-64 to capture a fifth consecutive American League West title, doing it without ace Catfish Hunter, freed to sign with the Yankees when arbitrator Peter Seitz voided his contract that December. Reggie Jackson led the club with 36 home runs and 104 RBI, while Sal Bando, Joe Rudi, Bert Campaneris, and 20-year-old Claudell Washington (.308, a team-high 182 hits) filled out a lineup still built around the dynasty's core. Vida Blue won 22 games and Ken Holtzman 18, with closer Rollie Fingers saving 24; on September 28 Blue, Fingers, Glenn Abbott, and Paul Lindblad combined on a no-hitter against California. It wasn't enough in October - the Boston Red Sox swept Oakland in three straight ALCS games, ending the dynasty's three-year reign, and Finley fired Dark for a second time weeks later.
