About Tony Perez
Tony Pérez's road to Cincinnati began in Cuba, where the Reds signed him in 1960 off the Havana Sugar Kings roster for the price of a plane ticket and a $2.50 exit visa, getting him out of the country just before Fidel Castro sealed the border. Minor-league manager Dave Bristol hung the nickname "the Big Dog" on him at Macon for his habit of finding a way to win close games; teammates shortened it to "Doggie," and both stuck for the rest of his career. Pérez debuted with the Reds in 1964, started at third base through 1971 and first base after, and anchored the Big Red Machine lineup, driving in 90 or more runs in eleven straight seasons. A seven-time All-Star who was named MVP of the 1967 All-Star Game, he delivered his signature swing in Game Seven of the 1975 World Series, the season pictured on this Topps card, #560, turning around Bill Lee's floating "Leephus" pitch for a home run that pushed Cincinnati to its first championship in 35 years. Pérez finished with 379 home runs and 1,652 RBI and entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.
