About Bob Montgomery
Robert Edward Montgomery signed with Boston as an 18-year-old amateur free agent out of Nashville's Central High School in 1962, then converted from third base to catcher in the low minors on a manager's advice. He debuted for the Red Sox on September 6, 1970, and spent his entire ten-year career backing up Boston's catchers, mostly Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk. When Fisk broke his arm in spring training 1975, Montgomery stepped in as Boston's primary catcher for the first half of the pennant-winning season pictured on his 1975 Topps card, then pinch-hit in the ninth inning of World Series Game Seven, grounding out against Will McEnaney in the Reds' 4-3 clincher. Nicknamed "Monty," he finished with a .258 average, 23 home runs and 156 RBIs over 387 games, all with Boston. He is remembered as the last major leaguer to bat without a protective helmet, playing his final game on September 9, 1979. He later spent 14 seasons as a Red Sox color commentator.
