About Rick Miller

Rick Miller broke in with the Boston Red Sox on September 4, 1971, doubling off the Green Monster in his first at-bat. Boston's second-round pick in the 1969 draft out of Michigan State, where he'd won the Big Ten batting title at .429, he became a left-handed-hitting, left-throwing outfielder prized for his instincts and range in center field. Miller spent 12 of his 15 seasons with the Red Sox, sandwiched around three years with the California Angels (1978-80), and won a Gold Glove in 1978. His 1975 Topps card, #103, catches him as a steady reserve on Boston's pennant-winning club, a frustrating season playing behind rookie sensations Fred Lynn and Jim Rice — though it ended with two pinch-hitting at-bats in the World Series against Cincinnati. Traded back to Boston with Carney Lansford and Mark Clear in December 1980, he retired in 1985 with a .269 average, 28 homers and 369 RBIs, later managing independent-league clubs in Nashua and New Bedford. He is the brother-in-law of Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk, having married Fisk's sister Janet.
