1975 Topps #356 Rico Petrocelli

About Rico Petrocelli
Americo Peter "Rico" Petrocelli signed with the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent in July 1961 out of Sheepshead Bay High School in Brooklyn, debuting in the majors on September 21, 1963. He spent his entire 13-year career with Boston, holding down shortstop through the 1967 "Impossible Dream" pennant season, when he was an All-Star and hit two home runs in the World Series against St. Louis. In 1969 he set a since-broken record for home runs by a shortstop with 40, made a second All-Star team, and led AL shortstops in fielding. In 1971 he shifted to third base to open shortstop for incoming Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio, and led AL third basemen in fielding that year. Petrocelli's card in the 1975 Topps set captures him during Boston's AL East championship season, when he anchored third base for a Red Sox club that swept Oakland in the ALCS and pushed the Reds to seven games in the World Series, batting .308 in that Series. He finished with 210 home runs and 773 RBIs, both among the Red Sox's all-time top ten, and was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1997.
