About Carl Yastrzemski

Carl Yastrzemski spent all 23 of his major-league seasons patrolling left field for the Boston Red Sox, taking over from Ted Williams in 1961 and retiring in 1983 as the franchise's all-time leader in hits, runs, doubles, RBI, and games played. Nicknamed "Yaz" — shorthand for a Polish surname reporters and fans struggled to pronounce — he won three American League batting titles (1963, 1967, 1968) and seven Gold Gloves. His signature year came in 1967: a Triple Crown (.326, 44 home runs, 121 RBI), the AL MVP award, and a 7-for-8 stretch over the final two games that carried Boston from a ninth-place finish the year before to the "Impossible Dream" pennant. He batted .400 with three home runs that fall in a seven-game World Series loss to St. Louis. Yastrzemski finished with 3,419 hits and 452 home runs, the first American Leaguer to clear both the 3,000-hit and 400-homer marks, and made 18 All-Star teams. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1989 on the first ballot with 94.6% of the vote. His 1975 Topps run pairs his standard card (#280) with an appearance on that year's AL/NL MVP-subset card (#205), marking his 1967 award.
