1975 Topps #8 Rogelio Moret

About Rogelio Moret
Rogelio "Roger" Moret Torres signed with the Red Sox out of Guayama, Puerto Rico in 1968 for an $8,000 bonus and reached Boston for good in 1973, when the tall, whip-armed lefty went 13-2 to lead the American League in winning percentage. His 1975 card catches him a year after a near no-hitter against the White Sox (spoiled by a seventh-inning infield single) and just before his finest season: a 14-3 mark and a league-best .824 winning percentage as Boston's pennant-winning fifth starter. Moret pitched in both the 1975 ALCS, picking up the win in relief against Oakland, and the World Series against Cincinnati, working scoreless innings in Game Six before Bernie Carbo pinch-hit for him ahead of Carbo's game-tying homer. He finished with a 41-18 record and 3.43 ERA in three full Red Sox seasons before trades to Atlanta and Texas wound down his career in 1978, cut short by a psychiatric hospitalization during a Rangers start. He died in his hometown of Guayama in 2020 at 71.
