About Rick Wise
Rick Wise's 1975 Topps card (#56) catches him fresh off a career-defining season with the Red Sox, who won the AL East on the strength of his 19 wins. A Portland, Oregon prodigy who starred in the Little League World Series before signing with the Phillies at 17, Wise debuted in 1964 and blossomed into a two-time All-Star (1971, 1973) known for pitching on the edge of history. On June 23, 1971, he no-hit the Reds and homered twice in the same game, joining a tiny club of pitchers to do both; two years later he lost a second no-hitter against Cincinnati with two outs in the ninth. Traded to St. Louis for Steve Carlton in one of baseball's most lopsided deals, then to Boston in 1973, Wise reached his signature moment in Game Six of the 1975 World Series, working a scoreless 12th before Carlton Fisk's walk-off homer won it. He finished his 18-year career with 188 wins and 1,647 strikeouts.
