1975 Topps #57 Dave Johnson

About Dave Johnson
David Allen Johnson signed with the Orioles out of Texas A&M in 1962 and took over Baltimore's starting second base job in 1966, finishing third in AL Rookie of the Year voting. He anchored four Orioles pennant winners and two World Series champions (1966, 1970), earning three straight Gold Gloves (1969-1971) and four All-Star selections. In the 1966 World Series he became the last batter to record a hit off Sandy Koufax. Traded to Atlanta after 1972, Johnson turned in a career year in 1973, slugging 43 home runs to break Rogers Hornsby's single-season record for a second baseman, as he, Hank Aaron, and Darrell Evans became the first trio of teammates to each clear 40. Teammates nicknamed him "Dum Dum" for constantly pitching data-driven theories on pitch selection and lineups, an eerily early brush with sabermetrics. Released by the Braves early in 1975, he played two seasons for Japan's Yomiuri Giants before returning to the majors with the Phillies in 1977, then in 1978 became the first major leaguer to hit two pinch-hit grand slams in one season. He later managed the 1986 Mets to a World Series title.
