About Carl Morton
Carl Wendle Morton starred in the outfield at Tulsa's Daniel Webster High before turning down a six-figure bonus to play at Oklahoma; he signed with the Milwaukee Braves organization after his sophomore year and was converted to pitcher on GM Paul Richards' orders in 1967. Left unprotected in the 1968 expansion draft, the redheaded right-hander — nicknamed "Big Red" — became a fourth starter for the fledgling Montreal Expos and went 18-11 with a 3.60 ERA in 1970, capturing NL Rookie of the Year honors, the franchise's first major award. Traded to Atlanta for Pat Jarvis in 1973, Morton reeled off three straight 250-plus-inning seasons, winning 15, 16 and 17 games and helping the 1974 Braves to their only winning finish of his career. His 1975 Topps card, #237, catches him at that peak with Atlanta. He credited a self-help paperback, reread before every start, for his turnaround. Morton died of a heart attack at 39 while jogging in Tulsa in 1983.
