About Vic Correll
Victor Crosby Correll broke into pro ball as a ninth-round pick of the Cleveland Indians in 1967 out of Georgia Southern University, then moved through the White Sox and Red Sox systems. He debuted with Boston on October 4, 1972, in the strike-shortened season's decisive final game against Detroit, going 2-for-4 with an RBI single — as close as he ever got to the postseason. Correll landed in Atlanta in 1974, backing up Johnny Oates before taking over as the Braves' starting catcher in 1975, the season pictured on his rookie card (#177), when he posted career bests: 11 home runs, 39 RBI and 103 games played. He held the job again in 1976 before Biff Pocoroba took over in 1977. Correll closed his career backing up Johnny Bench in Cincinnati from 1978-1980, including the Reds' 1979 NL West division title, though he didn't appear in the postseason. He finished with a .229 average, 29 home runs and 125 RBI over parts of eight big-league seasons.
