About Johnny Oates

Johnny Oates broke in as a second-round pick of the Chicago White Sox out of Virginia Tech in 1966, then signed with the Baltimore Orioles as a first-round selection in the January 1967 secondary draft. A sure-handed catcher who topped American League backstops with a .995 fielding percentage in 1972, he was traded that December along with Davey Johnson and Pat Dobson to the Atlanta Braves for slugger Earl Williams. Oates's 1975 Topps card catches him in his third and final Atlanta season, platooning behind the plate before a May trade sent him to Philadelphia. He helped the 1976 Phillies win the NL East and backed up Steve Yeager on Los Angeles Dodgers pennant winners in 1977 and 1978, closing his eleven-year playing career with the Yankees in 1981. Oates's greater legacy came later, guiding the Texas Rangers to their first three playoff berths and winning 1996 AL Manager of the Year before his death from brain cancer in 2004 at age 58.
