About Hank Aaron
Henry Louis Aaron broke into pro ball with the Negro American League's Indianapolis Clowns in 1951, signed with the Braves that June, and reached Milwaukee on April 13, 1954. Over 23 seasons in right field — 21 with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, two with the Milwaukee Brewers — he won the 1957 NL MVP award and led Milwaukee to that fall's World Series title, added two batting crowns (1956, 1959) and four home run titles, and made 25 All-Star teams. Nicknamed "Hammer" and "Hammerin' Hank" for his power, he retired with career records for RBIs (2,297), extra-base hits (1,477), and total bases (6,856), still ranking third all-time in hits. His defining moment, career home run #715 off Al Downing on April 8, 1974 to pass Babe Ruth, is captured on the '74 Highlights card that opens this set at #1 and carries his All-Star flag; his MVP season lives on again on the "1957 MVPs" subset card #195. Traded to Milwaukee that November, he's shown airbrushed into Brewers colors and pre-emptively penciled in at DH on card #660, closing the set as it opened. Aaron entered the Hall of Fame in 1982 on 97.8% of the vote.
