About Roric Harrison
Roric Edward Harrison signed out of Westchester High School in Los Angeles with the Houston Astros in 1965, then bounced through Houston's chain and the Seattle Pilots/Milwaukee Brewers system before a huge 1971 at Triple-A Rochester — 15-5, 2.81 ERA, an 18-strikeout game against Toledo — pushed him to Baltimore. He debuted for the Orioles in 1972, thriving in long relief under Earl Weaver, and homered off Cleveland's Ray Lamb, the last home run by an American League pitcher before the DH rule arrived. That December, Baltimore traded him with Pat Dobson, Davey Johnson and Johnny Oates to Atlanta for Earl Williams — the club pictured on his 1975 Topps card (#287). Splitting time as starter and reliever for the Braves from 1973-75, Harrison won a career-high 11 games in 1973 and carried the nickname "The Arm," earned for a fastball Steve Carlton once called "a super, fantastic arm." Knee and shoulder surgeries wore him down before his five-year, 30-35 career closed with Cleveland and the Twins in 1978.
