About Craig Robinson
Craig George Robinson, born August 21, 1948, in Abington, Pennsylvania, starred at shortstop for Wake Forest, earning first-team All-ACC honors as a junior and senior under coach Jack Stallings. Philadelphia drafted him in the 11th round in 1970, and after three minor-league seasons he debuted with the Phillies on September 9, 1972. Blocked by Larry Bowa, Robinson was traded to Atlanta with Barry Lersch for Ron Schueler in December 1973 and claimed the Braves' starting shortstop job in 1974, playing a career-high 145 games, the season pictured on card #367. He holds a unique piece of baseball history: he started at short alongside Hank Aaron on both April 4, 1974, when Aaron's Opening Day homer tied Babe Ruth's career record, and four days later when Aaron broke it, one of only six players to start both milestone games. Robinson closed out his career with Atlanta and San Francisco, finishing with a .219 average and 42 RBIs across six big-league seasons through 1977.
