About Jim Slaton

James Michael Slaton was born June 19, 1950, in Long Beach, California, and pitched at Antelope Valley High School and Antelope Valley College before Seattle's Pilots took him in the 15th round of the 1969 draft. He reached the majors with the Brewers on April 14, 1971, beating the White Sox in his debut, and quickly became a rotation fixture -- early comparisons ran to Tom Seaver, with one Brewers broadcaster calling him a future superstar. His 1975 Topps card (#281) catches him at age 25 in an 11-18, 217-inning season for Milwaukee. Slaton made his only All-Star team in 1977, was traded to Detroit that winter for Ben Oglivie, then returned to Milwaukee as a free agent in 1979. Moved to the bullpen late in his career, he won Game 4 of the 1982 World Series against St. Louis. He finished his 16-year career in 1986 as the Brewers' all-time leader in wins (117), innings, starts, and shutouts, and the club inducted him into its Wall of Honor in 2014.
