About Tom Murphy
Thomas Andrew Murphy, a 6-foot-3 right-hander from Cleveland, twice passed on draft offers from the Astros and Giants to finish his degree at Ohio University before signing with the California Angels as the sixth pick of the January 1967 draft. He debuted in the majors on June 13, 1968, and spent five seasons with the Angels as a starter, highlighted by a 16-13 mark in 1970, before trades sent him to the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals. Milwaukee acquired him for Bob Heise in December 1973, and manager Del Crandall converted him into a full-time reliever; Murphy thrived, leading the American League with 66 games finished and a 1.90 ERA in 1974, a season that drew a share of the AL MVP vote. His 1975 Topps card catches him the following year, when he again saved 20 games for the Brewers despite a rough 1-9 record. Murphy closed out his 12-year career with the Red Sox and Blue Jays, retiring in 1979 with 68 wins and 59 saves.
