1975 Topps #27 Ken Reitz

About Ken Reitz
Ken Reitz's 1975 Topps card (#27) arrives in the season that crowned his defensive game: after leading National League third basemen in fielding percentage in 1973 and 1974, the righty claimed the 1975 NL Gold Glove, ending Doug Rader's streak of five consecutive wins at the position. Drafted by St. Louis in the 31st round of the 1969 draft out of Daly City, California, Reitz debuted in 1972 and took over as the Cardinals' starting third baseman the following year when Joe Torre shifted back to first base. On Busch Stadium's artificial turf, he earned the nickname "Zamboni" for how cleanly he scooped up ground balls. Reitz went on to lead NL third basemen in fielding percentage six times overall and retired with the highest career fielding percentage of any National League third baseman. He started the 1980 All-Star Game while playing for the Cardinals, Giants, Cubs, and Pirates across an 11-year career (1972-1982). He died in 2021 at age 69.
