About St. Louis Cardinals

In Red Schoendienst's 11th season as manager, the 1975 Cardinals went 82-80, tying the Mets for third in a bunched NL East, 10½ games behind the champion Pirates. Ted Simmons anchored the offense from behind the plate, batting .332 with 100 RBI, while right fielder Reggie Smith hit 19 homers and third baseman Ken Reitz won a Gold Glove. Lou Brock held down left field, and reigning NL Rookie of the Year Bake McBride patrolled center. The season's defining moment came at its close: on September 1 the club held Bob Gibson Day, retiring his No. 45 alongside Stan Musial's and Dizzy Dean's, and two days later the 39-year-old right-hander made his final major-league appearance, yielding a game-deciding grand slam to the Cubs' Pete LaCock before walking off the mound for good.
