About Bob Gibson
Bob Gibson broke in with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1959 and spent all 17 of his big-league seasons in a Cardinals uniform, becoming the most fearsome starter of his era. He anchored two World Series champions (1964 and 1967), winning World Series MVP honors both times, and his 1968 season - a 1.12 ERA punctuated by 17 strikeouts in Game One of that year's Series - stands among the greatest ever pitched. That summer earned him the NL MVP award and the first of his two Cy Young Awards (1968, 1970); he was a nine-time All-Star. Nicknamed "Hoot" after cowboy film star Hoot Gibson, he pitched a no-hitter on August 14, 1971, and on July 17, 1974 struck out Cincinnati's César Gerónimo for his 3,000th career punchout - the milestone captured on his 1975 Topps '74 Highlights card (#3), paired here with his final base card (#150) from his farewell season. He also appears on the 1968 MVPs subset card (#206, with Denny McLain's name misspelled "McClain" on the back). Gibson retired with 251 wins and 3,117 strikeouts, then entered the Hall of Fame in 1981 in his first year of eligibility.
