About Rich Folkers
Richard Nevin Folkers, a left-handed pitcher out of Waterloo, Iowa, signed with the New York Mets after they took him in the first round of the 1967 secondary phase draft, the 20th pick overall, having already passed on a fourth-round Giants offer the year before. He missed the 1969 season to military service and debuted with the Mets on June 10, 1970. Traded to St. Louis in October 1971, Folkers found his best form as a Cardinal, working almost exclusively in relief and going 6-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 55 appearances in 1974. His 1975 Topps card, #98, still pictures him in Cardinals red even though St. Louis had already dealt him to the San Diego Padres that November. San Diego broadcaster Jerry Coleman, known for on-air slips, once told listeners Folkers was 'throwing up in the bullpen.' Folkers closed his career in 1977 with Milwaukee, finishing 19-23 with a 4.11 ERA over parts of seven big league seasons.
