1975 Topps #174 Bake McBride

About Bake McBride
Arnold Ray McBride — known simply as Bake, following his Negro Leagues-pitcher father — signed with the Cardinals as the last player picked in the 1970 draft, out of Westminster College in his hometown of Fulton, Missouri. He debuted in St. Louis in 1973 and, after topping .300 with 173 hits and 30 stolen bases in 1974, won the National League Rookie of the Year award, earning his 1975 Topps card its All-Star Rookie trophy. McBride made the 1976 All-Star team before injuries and a clash with new manager Vern Rapp sent him to Philadelphia in a 1977 trade. There he became a fan favorite nicknamed "Shake 'n Bake," anchoring a Phillies outfield that reached the 1980 World Series; his three-run homer in Game One helped power the franchise's first championship. Knee surgeries and a corneal infection cut into his final seasons with the Phillies and Cleveland before he retired in 1983 with a .299 career average. Not in the Hall of Fame, McBride later coached in the Mets' and Cardinals' minor league systems.
