About Sonny Siebert

Wilfred Charles "Sonny" Siebert broke into pro ball with Cleveland in 1958 as an outfielder, a two-sport star at the University of Missouri who had led the Tigers to the College World Series final. A series of injuries and boredom in the outfield pushed him toward the mound, where minor-league coach Spud Chandler convinced him pitching was his faster path to the majors. He debuted for the Indians in 1964 and threw a no-hitter against the Washington Senators on June 10, 1966, a highlight of back-to-back 16-8 seasons. A two-time All-Star (1966, 1971), Siebert was dealt to Boston in 1969 and, on September 2, 1971, became the last American League pitcher to homer twice in a game until Shohei Ohtani matched it in 2023. Traded to Texas and then St. Louis, he's pictured here in his lone Cardinals season, which included the pitching win in a 25-inning marathon against the Mets on September 11, 1974 - the second-longest game in National League history. He closed his career in 1975 with the Padres and Athletics, finishing 140-114 with a 3.21 ERA.
