About Jerry Hairston

Jerry Wayne Hairston was born February 16, 1952, in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of Negro Leagues and White Sox catcher Sam Hairston. Chicago drafted him in the third round of the 1970 draft out of Gardendale High School, and the switch-hitting outfielder debuted with the White Sox on July 26, 1973, appearing on this 1975 Topps card in his third season. Hairston split his 14-year career almost entirely with Chicago, taking a detour from 1978 to 1980 to play for Durango of the Mexican League, where he won a batting title and reached the Caribbean Series twice. He became the White Sox's all-time leader in pinch hits with 90, and on April 15, 1983, broke up a perfect-game bid by Detroit's Milt Wilcox with a two-out single in the ninth inning. His sons Jerry Hairston Jr. and Scott Hairston also played in the majors, making the Hairstons one of only three three-generation families in big-league history.
