1975 Topps #122 Al Hrabosky

About Al Hrabosky
Alan Thomas Hrabosky was the St. Louis Cardinals' first-round pick in January 1969 out of Fullerton College, after passing on a Minnesota Twins offer two years earlier. He debuted in the majors on June 16, 1970, and broke through as a reliever in 1974, going 8-1 with a 2.95 ERA. That year he built the on-mound routine — turning his back to the plate, talking to the ball, then glaring down hitters — that earned him the nickname "the Mad Hungarian," for his unusual surname and combustible act. In 1975, his career year, Hrabosky led the National League with 22 saves, went 13-3 with a 1.66 ERA, and won The Sporting News' NL Fireman of the Year award — despite being left off the All-Star team by Dodgers manager Walter Alston, prompting the Cardinals to stage "We Hlove Hrabosky Hbanner Hday" that July, which he answered with an extra-inning win over Los Angeles. His 1975 Topps card, issued that same season, captures him at the height of the act. He later pitched for Kansas City and Atlanta before retiring in 1982, then became a longtime Cardinals broadcaster.
