About Ray Sadecki
A $50,000 bonus baby out of Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, Kansas, Sadecki signed with the Cardinals at seventeen and debuted on May 19, 1960, at nineteen, going 9-9 for the Cardinals' Rookie of the Year honors. He broke through in 1964, going 20-11 to help St. Louis to its first pennant in eighteen years, then started twice in the World Series and won Game One as the Cardinals beat the Yankees in seven. San Francisco acquired him for Orlando Cepeda in 1966; the Mets got him in 1970, and as a swingman he helped New York reach the 1973 World Series, saving Game Four against Oakland. In October 1974 the Mets traded him back to St. Louis for Joe Torre, and his 1975 Topps card, #349, catches him in that second Cardinals stint before a May trade to Atlanta began a four-team, three-year finish to his career. He retired with 135 wins and 1,614 strikeouts over eighteen seasons and died in Mesa, Arizona, in 2014.
