About Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson (born January 13, 1950, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina) manned the Cardinals' middle infield for eight seasons, sharing his name with boxing's future heavyweight champion. Drafted by St. Louis in the third round of the 1970 draft out of Indian River State College, he debuted on September 5, 1972, and became the club's primary second baseman the next year, also seeing time at shortstop and third base. A well-regarded defender, Tyson ranked among the National League's top ten in defensive WAR in both 1974 and 1977. His 1975 Topps card catches him in a solid season in which he hit .266 with 98 hits and 37 RBIs over 122 games. His best offensive year came in an injury-shortened 1976, when he set career highs with a .286 average and .445 slugging percentage. Traded to the Chicago Cubs after 1979 for reliever Donnie Moore, Tyson played two more seasons before retiring in 1982 with a .241 career average, 27 home runs, and 269 RBIs over ten major-league seasons.
