About Ted Simmons

Ted Lyle Simmons broke in with the Cardinals as an 18-year-old in September 1968, out of Southfield, Michigan, where the switch-hitting catcher was St. Louis's first-round pick in the 1967 draft. He won the starting job behind the plate in 1971 after Joe Torre shifted to third base, and by the time card #75 hit shelves in 1975 he was in the middle of a season that set the National League record for hits by a catcher (188) and put him second in the batting race at .332. An eight-time All-Star (1972-74, 1977-79, 1981, 1983), he started the 1978 All-Star Game for an injured Johnny Bench and won catching's inaugural Silver Slugger Award in 1980. Nicknamed "Simba" for hair that grew into a lion's mane during the free-spirited seventies, he was traded to Milwaukee in December 1980 and homered in back-to-back games to open the 1982 World Series against his old Cardinals club. He retired in 1988 as the career leader in hits and doubles by a catcher, and the Cardinals retired his No. 23 in 2021, the same year he was formally inducted into Cooperstown after the Modern Baseball Era Committee elected him in December 2019.
