About Mark Belanger

Mark Henry Belanger, a lanky 6-foot-1 shortstop nicknamed "The Blade" for his narrow, angular frame, anchored the Baltimore Orioles infield for parts of 18 big-league seasons from 1965 to 1982. Signed by Baltimore for $35,000 out of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in 1962, he broke into the majors as a September call-up in 1965 and took over as the Orioles' regular shortstop in 1967, succeeding future Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio. Playing alongside Brooks Robinson and Paul Blair, Belanger helped Baltimore capture six AL East titles, five pennants, and the 1970 World Series championship. By the time his 1975 Topps card (#74) reached shelves, he had already collected four of his eventual eight Gold Gloves, retiring with the highest career fielding percentage (.977) by an American League shortstop. A career .228 hitter who made his only All-Star team in 1976, Belanger was prized almost entirely for his glove, once described by Sports Illustrated as welcoming grounders "into loving arms." He later served as an official with the Major League Baseball Players Association and was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 1983.
