About Dave McNally

David Arthur McNally, a left-handed pitcher out of Billings, Montana, signed with the Orioles out of American Legion ball in 1960 and reached Baltimore in 1962, throwing a shutout in his major-league debut. He anchored the Orioles' rotation through their run of four pennants and two World Series titles (1966, 1970), winning 20 or more games in four straight seasons from 1968 through 1971 and forming one-fourth of the 1971 staff that became the last in history to field four 20-game winners. A three-time All-Star (1969, 1970, 1972), McNally became the first pitcher in World Series history to hit a grand slam, driving in four runs off Cincinnati's Wayne Granger in Game 3 of the 1970 Series and winning that game himself as Baltimore beat the Reds in five. Dealt to Montreal after the 1974 season, he retired midway through 1975 and later joined Andy Messersmith's grievance against baseball's reserve clause, a case that helped open the door to free agency.
