About Earl Williams

Card #97 catches Earl Williams as an Oriole, the position he occupied for two pennant-winning seasons after Baltimore acquired him from Atlanta in a blockbuster December 1972 trade that sent Davey Johnson, Pat Dobson, and Johnny Oates to the Braves. A first-round pick by the Milwaukee Braves in 1965 out of Montclair, New Jersey, Williams broke in as a corner infielder before Atlanta converted him to catcher in 1971 — a move that produced 33 home runs, 87 RBIs, and the National League Rookie of the Year award despite his having never caught a professional inning before that season. He led the 1973 Orioles with 83 RBIs and helped the club to the AL East title, then returned in 1974, reaching the ALCS both years, though Baltimore lost to Oakland each time. His lone postseason home run, off Ken Holtzman in Game Three of the 1973 ALCS, staked the Orioles to an early lead. Traded back to Atlanta after the 1974 season, he closed out his career with the Expos and Athletics, finishing with 138 home runs over eight seasons.
