About Paul Blair

Paul Blair broke in with the Orioles on September 9, 1964, after signing with the Mets as an amateur free agent in 1961 and being swept up in Baltimore's 1962 first-year draft. He won the Orioles' center-field job for good in 1965, playing so shallow that hitters could rarely beat him to balls hit over his head. Blair anchored the outfield for Baltimore's 1966 and 1969-71 pennant winners, homering in Game 3 of the 1966 World Series sweep and batting .474 in the 1970 Series against Cincinnati. A two-time All-Star (1969, 1973) nicknamed "Motormouth" for his nonstop chatter, he won eight Gold Gloves, seven of them in a row from 1969 through 1975 - the very season pictured on his 1975 Topps card No. 275 - finishing with a career range factor that outpaced even Willie Mays. Traded to the Yankees in January 1977, he added two more championship rings before a brief stop in Cincinnati and a final season back in New York. Blair retired with 134 home runs, 620 RBI and a .987 fielding percentage, entered the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1984, and died in 2013 after collapsing while bowling near Baltimore.
