1975 Topps #272 Lynn McGlothen

About Lynn McGlothen
Lynn McGlothen, a hard-throwing right-hander from Grambling, Louisiana, was a third-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in 1968 and reached the majors in 1972, posting the best rookie ERA (3.41) by a Red Sox starter since 1969. Traded to St. Louis in December 1973, he had his finest season in 1974: a 16-12 record, three shutouts, and a 2.70 ERA that drew Cy Young and MVP consideration and earned his only All-Star selection, where he entered the game to strike out Reggie Jackson. His 1975 Topps card #272 captures him fresh off that career year. He won 15 games in 1975 and 13 in 1976 before a trade sent him to San Francisco for Ken Reitz, then he pitched for the Cubs, White Sox, and Yankees, retiring in 1982 with an 86-93 record, 3.98 ERA, and 939 strikeouts over 11 seasons. He died at 34 in a 1984 mobile-home fire in Dubach, Louisiana, killed alongside his girlfriend as she tried to save him after getting her daughters to safety.
