About Bobby Murcer

Bobby Murcer signed with the Yankees for a $10,000 bonus in June 1964, inked by scout Tom Greenwade — the same scout who had signed Murcer's boyhood idol, Mickey Mantle. Arriving in the majors as a shortstop-turned-center-fielder, Murcer inherited comparisons to Mantle and DiMaggio and blossomed into a five-time All-Star (1971-75) and the face of the Yankees through two Army years and the team's lean early-1970s seasons. He won a Gold Glove in 1972, led the American League in on-base percentage in 1971 (.427) and in runs (102) and total bases (314) in 1972, and hit a career-high .331 that same 1971 season. His fourth straight All-Star nod came in 1974, the flag stamped on this card, just before New York traded him to San Francisco for Bobby Bonds. Murcer drove in 91 and 90 runs in his two Giants seasons before moving to the Cubs and returning to the Yankees in 1979, the year he delivered a game-winning homer and single hours after eulogizing slain captain Thurman Munson. He retired in 1983 with 252 home runs and became a longtime Yankees broadcaster until brain cancer claimed his life in 2008.
