About John D'Acquisto

A San Diego native who threw three no-hitters in his senior year at St. Augustine High School, D'Acquisto was the Giants' first-round pick, 17th overall, in the 1970 draft. He debuted on September 2, 1973, and earned his first win three weeks later with a complete-game, 11-strikeout effort against the Padres. In 1974 the hard-throwing right-hander went 12-14 with a 3.77 ERA and led San Francisco's staff in starts and strikeouts, earning National League Rookie Pitcher of the Year honors — a season that should have brought his 1975 Topps card the All-Star Rookie trophy Topps gave that year's top freshmen, an omission the card carries to this day. Elbow surgery cost him most of 1975, and he was traded to St. Louis, then San Diego, where he shifted to the bullpen and posted a 2.13 ERA with 10 saves in 1978. D'Acquisto closed out a ten-year career with the Expos, Angels and Athletics, finishing 34-51 with 600 strikeouts over 266 games.
