1975 Topps #347 Mike Caldwell

About Mike Caldwell
Mike Caldwell, pictured with the San Francisco Giants on his 1975 Topps card (#347), was a left-handed pitcher whose 14-year major league career spanned the Padres, Giants, Reds, and Brewers. Drafted by San Diego in 1971 out of North Carolina State, Caldwell was traded to the Giants for Willie McCovey in 1973 and went 14-5 with a 2.95 ERA in 1974, but elbow surgery led to a rough 7-13, 4.79-ERA showing in the 1975 season depicted on this card. Dealt to Milwaukee in 1977, Caldwell authored his signature year in 1978, going 22-9 with a 2.36 ERA and leading the American League in complete games, earning AL Comeback Player of the Year honors and finishing runner-up for the Cy Young Award. He won two games, including a Game One shutout, during the Brewers' 1982 World Series run. Nicknamed "Mr. Warmth" for the perpetual scowl that never left his face on the mound, Caldwell retired with 137 career wins and remains Milwaukee's all-time victory leader among left-handers. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
