About Randy Moffitt
Randall James Moffitt broke into pro ball as a Long Beach State product, taken by the Giants in the first round (18th overall) of the 1970 draft. A starter who posted a 1.60 ERA at Class-A Fresno in 1970, he was converted to the bullpen at Triple-A Phoenix in 1971 and stuck there for good, debuting with San Francisco on June 11, 1972. Moffitt anchored the Giants' relief corps for a decade, pairing first with Elías Sosa and later Gary Lavelle, and landed among the NL's top ten in saves four times and in games pitched three times; his lone career start came June 21, 1974. His #132 card catches him three years past that 1972 rookie season, well established as San Francisco's closer. Over 12 seasons with the Giants, Astros, and Blue Jays he went 43-52 with 96 saves and 455 strikeouts, later earning a spot on the Giants Wall of Fame. Moffitt, the younger brother of tennis great Billie Jean King, died in his native Long Beach in August 2025 at age 76.
