About Jim Barr
James Leland Barr, a right-hander out of USC who helped the Trojans win NCAA titles in 1968 and 1970, was picked by the San Francisco Giants in the third round of the 1970 draft, having already been drafted five times by other clubs without signing. He debuted with the Giants on July 31, 1971, and by 1972 had won a rotation job — that August he set the major league record for consecutive batters retired, setting down 41 in a row across two complete-game starts against Pittsburgh and St. Louis, a feat since equaled or topped by relievers but never again achieved within just two games. He won at least ten games in five straight seasons for San Francisco from 1973-1977, the form captured on his 1975 Topps #107 card, before a stint with the California Angels and a return to the Giants for 1982-83. He finished 101-112 with a 3.56 ERA and 741 strikeouts, later coached at Sacramento State for 16 years, and is honored on the Giants Wall of Fame.
