About Mike Hargrove

Mike Hargrove broke into pro ball as a 25th-round pick of the Texas Rangers out of Northwestern Oklahoma State in 1972, and just two years removed from semipro ball he stunned the American League by hitting .323 in 1974 to win AL Rookie of the Year, the first Rangers player so honored. His 1975 Topps card (#106) carries the All-Star Rookie trophy and is his recognized rookie card; the back's at-bat totals for 1972 and 1973 are printing errors, listing 70 and 130 instead of the correct 243 and 456. Hargrove made the AL All-Star team that same year and went on to hit .290 with a .396 on-base percentage over 12 seasons with Texas, Cleveland, and San Diego. His fussy plate routine, readjusting his batting glove, helmet, and sleeves before every pitch, earned him the nickname "The Human Rain Delay," which traced back to a sponge doughnut ring he wore after damaging a thumb nerve as a minor leaguer in 1973. He later managed Cleveland to back-to-back American League pennants in 1995 and 1997.
