About Len Randle

Leonard Shenoff Randle grew up in Compton, California, starred in football and baseball at Centennial High, and helped Arizona State win the 1969 College World Series before the Washington Senators made him a first-round pick in 1970. He debuted in 1971 and moved with the franchise to Texas in 1972, developing into a switch-hitting utility man across the infield and outfield. This 1975 Topps card catches him at his statistical peak with the Rangers: career-high totals of 166 hits, 85 runs, and 57 RBI while hitting .276, building on the .302 season in 1974 that drew down-ballot MVP votes. His Texas tenure also produced two infamous incidents — a bench-clearing 1974 brawl with Cleveland's Milt Wilcox, and a 1977 spring-training punch that broke manager Frank Lucchesi's cheekbone and sent Randle to the Mets. He closed out a 12-year career with the Yankees, Cubs, and Mariners through 1982, later helped popularize baseball in Italy, and was profiled in MLB Network's "The Most Interesting Man in Baseball" before his death in 2024.
